Tom W. Smith Junior, left, aviation radioman and gunner second class and his cousin, Staff Sergeant John A. Melvin. Smith and Melvin are visiting their aunt, Mrs. S. C. Smith, 3304 Avenue I. The two service men grew up together in Belton and attended Belton High School. Smith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Smith and Melvin is the son of Mrs. John Melvin, both of Belton. Smith has participated in 39 missions including 25 bombing raids and 14 spotting and strafing sorties and has nearly 300 hours' combat flying time. He has three stars on his gunner's wings for contact with the enemy and three stars on his campaign ribbon, one for Bougainville and Solomons action, the other two can't be told. Melvin is on leave from Camp Carson, Colorado, where he is stationed with the Signal Corps. He has been in the Army 17 months. In this picture, they are standing, in military uniform with arms on each others shoulders. Behind them is a brick fireplace, mantle with framed portraits and mini donkey figurines.
