Description
Home on leave after completing 40 bombing missions in the Mediterranean theater, First Lieutenant George R. Williams, is getting acquainted with his 5 month old son. As bombardier on a Marauder in the 12th Air Force, he ran up 209 hours from bases in North Africa and Sardinia and flew his last combat sortie on Christmas Eve. Williams wears the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters. He was wounded last September 24, while destroying a bridge over the Volturno River in Italy. His entire formation was badly battered by antiaircraft fire and he was injured in the face and neck when a shell exploded under his compartment in his plane's nose. The plane itself was pierced 100 times by flak and lost its hydraulic system, but made a safe belly landing. The mishap occurred on his twenty seventh mission. Williams went back to his bomb sight two days later. He is the son of Mrs. J. O. Williams of Garland, Texas. His wife is the former Miss Doris Weaver of Dallas, Texas.
