"By Bill Van Fleet.Star-Telegram Sports Writer.At last it has happened.Monday night's finals of the Eighth Annual Texas Golden Gloves will be "covered" by a woman sports writer.The young lady is Betsy Ross, who for some months has been sports editor for the Abilene Reporter-News. She will join Hal Sayles of the Reporter-News who directed the Abilene tournament this year.Miss Ross will lend eye-appeal to a press row that formerly carried more brains than looks. She used to live at Pecos, but accepted a straight reporter's job at Abilene a couple of years ago. She dabbled in sports occasionally, and showed such ability that when Sayles moved into another line of news work, she was added to the sports staff. Howard Green, the new sports editor, later was drafted, and Betsy stepped in as head of the department. And she does a good job, too.SAYLES THE 'DEAN.'The press row is full this year, with eleven visiting writers keeping the wires busy with news about their home town boys.Dean of the lot is Sayles, who has not missed a one of the eight State tournaments. Last year, he share[d] this honor with Jerry Malin of Amarillo, but Jerry didn't make it this time.Hal was pretty happy Saturday afternoon His team was tied with Camp Fanin for the team title, and he still had some good boys in the running. . . ."
