Description
Private First Class Gertrude June Sheffield, of the Women's Army Corps (WAC), was in Fort Worth, Texas to visit her mother Mrs. G. Sheffield. Private Sheffield moved to France in 1936 where she studied dress designing. When the war broke out, she volunteered at an American hospital in Paris, France. She won two French Government decorations for bravery under fire as an ambulance driver during the Battle of France. Before the war, she was a beauty prize winner and a Broadway dancer. Private Sheffield is standing on a train platform with her coat draped over her shoulder and baggage at her feet. She is dressed in her military uniform.
