Description

Football. Handley High School. Backfield, left to right, Bob Story, E. M. Lumpkin, Earl York, and Charles W. Whittle.Four young men in football gear (shirts, padding, short pants, socks and high laceup boots, with light colored helmets). They are in a mowed grassy field with cyclone fencing around the back edges, beyond which are trees. Clipping:"The Handley backfield which will start in the game Saturday night against Diamond Hill for the championship of District 14-A. Left to right areBob Story, quarterback; E. M. Lumpkin, halfback; Earl York, fullback, and Charles W. Whittle, halfback.--Star-Telegram Photo."Stamped: Star-Telegram. Eve. Nov. 17, 1943Second clipping in the envelope ads more context to the photo of these players: Clipping: "Saturday Night at Farrington [field, Fort Worth]Handley, Diamond Hill to Settle 14-A Grid HonorsThe ball game Saturday at 8:15 p.m. at Farrington Field between the Handley Greyhounds and the Diamond Hill Eagles will be fore the District 14-A championship and take it from the experts it will be a game of real championship caliber. Both clubs are untied and undefeated and neither has actually been extended so far this season. Both have fast, elusive backs who will be running behind aggressive forward walls.Handley will be seeking their fourth district championship in as many years. And from the way the Greyhounds went through their practice session Wednesday they mean business. The two boys likely to provide the most fireworks are Earl York, 168-pound Handley fullback and Jack Barton, 155-pound Diamond Hill quarterback. York is a power runner who also is fast and hard to nab in an open field. Barton, sparkplug of the Eagle attack, is a whiz once he gets by the line of scrimmage. Either of these boys would go good in faster company. But neither team can concentrate on just one opposing back. Both foursomes are dangerous from the word go. Aiding York in the Handley backfield will be Bob Story, quarterback; E. M. Lumpkin, halfback and Charles Whittle, halfback. Rounding out the Eagle rear cordon will be Elmus Ussery, Jack Sparks and Bobby Housewright. Both teams boast strong lines that haven't been trampled on as yet. In the Handley forward wall will be such boys as Renfro, Brooks, Johnson, Rollins and Pierce. The big guns in the Diamond Hill line include Tom Hudgins, Jess Preston, Harry Styles, Henry Wright and Alfredo Torres.Even on a comparative score basis, the game should be a honey. Diamond Hill beat Midlothain 43-0 last week while Handley turned the trick 46—three points difference only."
