Description

Mrs. Otis O. Black reading notice of death of her son. A woman standing in front of the plaster wall used by the Star-Telegram for many of their photographs. She is wearing a two-color dress with a lace collar, the top of the dress lighter in color and the cloth collar matching the skirt, with the lace tucked under the cloth. The air medal awarded [posthumously] to her son is attached to the lace. She has on a beret-style hat with a white feather in the side. She has on eyeglasses, a pearl broach and a wedding ring, and is standing facing to her right, reading the letter of notification that is tilted so the camera can see some of the printed body of the letter. Her son died in a crash in the South Pacific the previous year. Clipping:"The Bad NewsMrs. Otis O. Black, wearing the Air Medal she recently accepted for her son, Sgt. Otis Black Jr., 23, reads the War Department's notification of his death. Sergeant Black died in a crash on Rendova Island [Northwest of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands of the South Pacific] Sept. 8, 1942, according to the message received this week."Stamped: Star-Telegram Morn.
