Description

Faye Saxon shown with coat and collection of insignia Woman standing in front of wall holding up a jacket so the back is displayed to the camera. The jacket has many military insignia stitched in place. Saxon is wearing a light blouse with a vest or jumper over it. Clipping: Coat of Many Insignia Is Partial to No One Service Texas Wesleyan College Co-ed Is Puzzle to Men Who Can't Tell Whether to Salute, or Not--or Why! Soldiers don't know whether to salute or whistle when they see pretty Miss Faye Saxon walk down the street. The blue-eyed blond's coat, which is decorated with 26 Army and Navy insignia and 11 branch markings, rivals the adornment of a four-star general. A graduate of North Side High School and at present a sophomore physical education major at Texas Wesleyan College, most of her insignia have come from former classmates who are now in the service. She is proudest of two buttons and rank insignia of a French sniper sent her from Casablanca by Marcelle Martin, a Fort Worth boy now a petty officer in the Coast Guard. On the front left side of her jacket she wears a pair of navigator's wings, CPT wings, Field Artillery and Coast Artillery insignia, an officer's US pin and an A. & M. lieutenant's bar. Gold anchors of the Navy Air Corps cadets are on her collar. Miss Saxon's collection began with a pharmacist's mate second class insignia and includes those of a radio mate second class, a pharmacist's mate assigned to the Marines, tank destroyer, Seabees, rail-splitters, transport command, United States Merchant Marine, the 4th and 1st Tank Battalion, and the chevrons of a private first class, a corporal and a sergeant. She writes to most of the fellows whose insignia she wears and receives new ones every day to add to her collection. At the rate she's going it won't be long before she will have to start on another coat. Miss Saxon, 17, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Saxon of 2118 Chestnut." Stamped: Star-Telegram Morning, Oct. 30 1943.
