    Description

Technician Sergeant James E. Aery, 25, nephew of Mrs. G. R. Louden, 2108 Market, returned after a year and a half of combat action. He earned the Air Medal and an Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross for more than 500 combat flying hours. Aery, who was on a Flying Fortress, was not wounded and the squadron of Fortresses he was in never lost an airplane during the 18 months of combat. Sergeant Aery's Flying Fortress, named after Barney Google's 'Kangaroo,' wears six flags for six definitively downed Jap [sic] planes and 20 miniature bombs for bombing missions. Aery , who enlisted in the Army in 1938 and went overseas in May, 1940, returned Sept. 22 to San Francisco. In the photograph, Tech. Sgt. Aery is wearing a United States Air Force uniform and is standing in front of a blank wall. There are several medals on the top left pocket.
