Jake H. Hess is retiring as the local freight agent for Santa Fe Railroad after 56 years of service. Mr. Hess began as a railroad man at 15 years old. He started by carrying water for a track gang in Kansas for nine dollars a week. From there Mr. Hess climbed the ladder and has spent more than two decades in Fort Worth, Texas, raising a family. As he approaches the age of 72, Mr. Hess is retiring on doctor's orders. He plans to spend his free time with his wife of 38 years, Mrs. Frances Bell Hess.
