Description
Eugene Mahanay is a sailor in the United States Navy. He was a ship's cook on the USS Hugh L. Scott. On November 11, 1942, the ship was dropping supplies off the coast of Africa when it was torpedoed. Mahanay was in the cooks' quarters at the time of the explosion. He woke in a pile of wreckage and grabbed a life jacket. He floated through oil and water and made his way to the rescue boat. He was one of the last three men to leave the ship. Mahanay is a native of Alvarado, Texas, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Mahanay. He is in Fort Worth, Texas, on furlough, visiting his uncle, Mr. Chester Woodward. Mahanay is standing against a wall, dressed in his military uniform.
