Description

Instead of disbanding for the duration, the Canwick Club is doing United Services Organization (U. S. O.) work. Here three members are showing their check for a U. S. O. donation to service men enjoying the club hospitality. Left to right, Mrs. Charlie Hillard, president; Sergeant Ken Elbert; Mrs. Harriette Holmes, vice president; R. L. Logan of Norfolk, Virginia, third class yeoman; and Mrs. Homer Land, secretary. The first four of the group are sitting at a coffee table, while Mrs. Land is standing and pouring Mr. Logan a cup of coffee. Mr. Logan is holding up his cup ad looking at it with anticipation. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hillard is handing a check to Sergeant Elbert, who is accepting it with a smile. Mrs. Holmes is smiling with her hands in her lap, looking directly at the camera. Behind them, a sign reading 'U. S. O Recreation Room Courtesy Bowen Busses is painted on the window. Copies of the publication Newsweek are hanging in a magazine stand in the right center of the photograph. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, December 9, 1942.
