Description
Denial Club members, left to right: Bennie Smith, Morris Harris and Barbra Childress giving donations to B. C. Shulkey, assistant superintendent of schools. The children are from the 'Gay Street Negro Elementary School'. They are lined up behind one another as Barbra hands Mr. Shulkey a jar of donations that totaled up to $18.75. The money is to be used to buy a bond in the Gay Street school's name. Mr. Shulkey looks on at the children and holds the bottom of the jar. He is wearing a double-breasted suit with a dark tie. Bennie and Morris are also wearing dark suits while Barbra wears a floral dress. There are various pictures pinned to the wall. These sixth graders did not taste candy or chewing gum or soda water, instead they brought pennies to school and put them in a box. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, November 2, 1942.
