    Description

Colonel C. A. Wilkinson measuring a mule for pack purposes in the United States Army. This particular mule was not purchased because it was too tall and too heavy, but Colonel Wilkinson stressed the fact that the mule had the deep body, good legs and feet and general conformation desired. The colonel is in uniform with boots up to his knees. His right hand is holding a tall wooden measuring stick next to the mule. There is an unidentified man, at left, holding the harness of the mule, just behind the Colonel. He is wearing trousers, laced up shoes, a long sleeve shirt and a straw hat. Behind the two men and the mule is a brick building with the word "Office" painted on it and a large sign, over an opening, that reads "Ross Brothers Horse and Mule Company" in Mule Alley of the Fort Worth Stockyards.
