Description
R. N. Riddle, life guard. "Lela Mae Holshouser, 13, of Haltom City, narrowly escaped drowning at Sylvania Park Swimming Pool Monday afternoon after she plunged into the water over her head to rescue Charles Volz, 12, also of Haltom City. Mrs. T. P. Holshouser, Lela Mae's mother, who witnessed the incident rushed to the edge of the pool and assisted Charles from the water as he managed to grasp a rail after Lela Mae had given him a helpful shove, but Lela Mae failed to rise. Several swimmers responded to Mrs. Holshouser's cries and dived in search of Lela Mae without success until R. N. Riddle, 18, pool life guard, was attracted by the shouts. Riddle dived and located the girl on his first plunge. She was unconscious when brought to the surface. Riddle administered artificial respiration and the girl was revived sufficiently for a Phillips ambulance." Here, Mr. Riddle poses shyly while sitting on a bench. He wears swim trunks and a whistle around his neck, smiling reluctantly.
