Description
Boy Scouts throughout Fort Worth, Texas, are undergoing civilian defense training. To gain membership in the Emergency Service Corps, they must learn first aid, signaling, message transmission, emergency feeding, and water purification. Practicing first aid under blackout conditions, left to right, are Seascouts Earl Gammons and James Van Buskirk. Mr. Gammons is administering first aid in pitch darkness, except for the small glow of a blackout lantern. The photograph was snapped using blackout flashbulbs, a new technique that gives off no visible light, but instead uses infrared rays. This exercise is the fourth in a series of training activities. The Emergency Service Corps would serve as the civilians' first line of defense in case of bombing war in the country.
