Description
The Texas Steer departs for Chicago by way of the Trinity River near the Belknap Street Bridge in Fort Worth; the crew on board the flatboat are Commodore Col. B. M. (Basil Muse) Hatfield, Buddy Cashion, J. F. Norris, D. E. Bennett, and W. J. West. As the boat pulled out, the Bluebonnet Girls' String Band played "Over the Waves," and a crowd of about 75 people stood on the shore and the bridge above, wishing the boat a successful maiden voyage. Just before sailing away, the captain and crew were given a sendoff party by well-wishers, in which La Vonne Markum, the first baby to go aboard the ship, took part. The girls' band, consisting of Misses Cecil Lynn, guitar; Dorothy Lowe, violin; Lily Mae Armstrong, mandolin; and Ola Markum, manager, played and sang "Three Cheers for Commodore Hatfield," an original song composed in honor of the occasion.
