Description
Texas State Fair, Dallas. Crowd shot. An African American can be seen in the middle of the photo, smiling and looking at the camera. The presence of African Americans at the Texas State Park indicates that the picture was taken after 1961. In 1960, Althea Simmons, a black attorney and secretary of the Texas State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), picketed and protested segregation at the Texas State Fair, leading to the overturning (in 1961) of what was known as "Nergo's Day." Hung from the ceiling are flags from different countries.
