Sebastian D. Allis worked as a newspaper clerk for the New Orleans Daily Picayune. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army with the Louisiana Brigade and later with Capt. Albert C. Blanchard's Phoenix Company, 1846-1847. Allis was appointed postmaster in Vera Cruz, Mexico, in 1847. This collection is comprised of two manuscript letters written by Sebastian D. Allis to his sister Lucretia Allis in Louisiana during the Mexican War.
