Spanning three generations, three states, and over a hundred years, the Gage and Powell Family Papers are comprised of correspondence, diaries, personal papers, photographs, and legal and financial documents. The lives of primarily six people are illuminated in the collection: Edward L. Gage (1846-1892); Anna Durrell Gage (1854-1919); Harriet Gage Heyer (1881-); Ernest M. Powell (1847-1925); Mary Durrell Powell (1858-1951); and Anna Harriet Heyer (1909-2002). The papers of Edward Gage and his wife Anna provide insights into West Texas ranching in the late 1800s and the growth of Texas towns such as Alpine and Marathon. The materials of Harriet Gage, her husband Arthur Heyer, and their daughter Anna Harriet Heyer reflect life at the University of Cincinnati at the start of the 20th century and Texas Christian University in the 1930s. The history of the Fort Worth Woman's Club and its subdivision, the Muarda Club, are also contained within the material. The materials of Ernest and Mary Durrell Powell, both Dallas philanthropists, can elucidate the history and growth of Dallas, Texas, philanthropic efforts in Dallas, and missionary efforts to Central America.
