Pinkie J. Harris Papers

Pinkie Juanita Harris (1885-1961) grew up in Seguin, Texas and lived in Bay City, Texas. Pinkie's ancestors were enslaved Black southerners, Freedmen, and allegedly Indigenous peoples. Pinkie graduated from Prairie View Normal and Industrial College (now Prairie View A&M University) in 1921 and worked as a home demonstration agent, travelling throughout rural South Texas while teaching local women home economics in the early 20th century. The collection includes nearly 200 letters, including correspondence with Historical Black Colleges and Universities as well as travelling Texan preachers; this collection provides insight into Black life in Texas during that time period. Collection materials include personal and professional correspondences to Pinkie and between members of her family, as well as photographs, documents, and ephemera relating to Pinkie’s finances, property purchases, writings, education, and professional development.
