Jenkins Garrett (1914-2010) was a prominent Fort Worth attorney, businessman, civic leader and philanthropist who served on the Board of Trustees for the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1960–1968) and Tarrant County Junior College District (1965-1971). He also served on the Board of Regents for the University of Texas System. He and his wife Virginia Garrett (1920-2012) were renowned collectors of Texana and in 1973-1974 donated their extensive Texas Collection to UT Arlington which consisted of over 10,000 items, including books, broadsides, newspapers, graphics, manuscripts, sheet music, currency, and historical materials in other formats. From 1990-1997, Virginia Garrett also donated her extensive atlas, geography textbook and map collections to UT Arlington. Their gifts collectively make up the Jenkins Garrett Library and the Virginia Garrett Cartographic History Library, serving as companion libraries in the UTA Libraries’ Special Collections. They continued to support the library during the decades following the original gift by helping the library raise funds, cultivate other donors, and promote the collection.
