Description
The picture shows several male students gathered on some bleachers; undated (ca. late 1930s). They are dressed as stereotypical Native Americans, with feathers on their heads and markings on their chests made with paint. They are all looking at the camera. [Note: Many Native American tribes in the Southwest used the symbol seen painted on their chests resembling a swastika prior to World War II. As a specific example, in the Navajo culture, it is a symbol of a whirling log and represents a journey taken by a "hero" on the San Juan River and is also used in healing ceremonies.]
