Arthur Saft Family Papers

The Arthur Saft Family Papers primarily consist of a scrapbook that Nadine Spoonts Lewis Saft Gary completed after her husbands death. The scrapbook contains printed materials and some letters that document the professional careers of both Arthur and Nadine Saft. The collection also includes loose photographs, newspaper articles, and transcribed newspaper articles. There is no indication that these loose materials were once physically part of the scrapbook. The collection is organized into five folders. The first folder contains one thank you letter to Nadine Saft and photographs of Arthur and Nadine Saft in their concert attire. There are also snapshot photographs of Nadine and one man described as Arthur, but these photographs may have been misidentified and may actually be photographs of Francis P. Gary, Nadine's third husband. The second folder contains printed material: photocopied newspaper articles about Saft performances, two concert programs, one "The Musicale" newsletter, and transcribed press comments about Nadine Saft. The third folder contains loose clippings that were found in the scrapbook. These were photocopied and the photocopies placed at the back of folder 5. The next two folders contain the preservation copy of the scrapbook. The original scrapbook sits at the bottom of the box due to its bulk. The scrapbook primarily contains clipped newspaper reviews and concert programs from Arthur Saft performances from 1907-1915 and his joint performances with Nadine, 1915-1918. The scrapbook also contains newspaper reviews written by Arthur about other performers, thank you letters from audiences and concert hosts, newspaper clippings about Arthur's death, and concert tickets. The collection is notable in that it documents the careers of two Texas musical performing artists during the first two decades of the twentieth century.
