The materials contained in this collection trace the development of the Arlington Art Association from its unsuccessful attempt to create an art association in 1939 to the realization of its members' dream for an Art Museum and Center in 1987. Howard Joyner, first president of the Association, compiled the collection, therefore, many of the items contain his notes or comments. Included are numerous letters to and from Howard Joyner which also relate to the Association. The Arlington Art Association Records offer the researcher a comprehensive view of the growth and development of the organization in the City of Arlington. The collection outlines the struggle to bring the arts to a prominent position in Arlington, culminating in the purchase of the JC Penney Building and the opening of the Arlington Museum of Art Center. The collection also provides information on the pivotal and influential role that Howard and Arista Joyner played in the development and progress of the organization.
