Abstract
The following Thesis seeks to determine the nature of the relationship between school social workers and academic outcomes in Texas. This Thesis is guided by three research questions 1. What is the nature of the relationship between the number of school social workers in a school district and Accountability Rating? 2. What is the nature of the relationship between the number of school social workers in a school district and high school dropout rate? 3.What is the nature of the relationship between the number of school social workers in a school district and post-secondary readiness? In order to answer these questions data was gathered from the 1,247 Texas school districts. Using the 2016-2017 Texas Education Agency District Report Cards, the number of school social workers in a district, school readiness, drop out, accountability rating, and economically disadvantaged students’ ratings were gathered. Using SPSS, a Pearson Correlation was used to analyze the data. The results indicated correlations between the number of school social workers, and dropout rates, economically disadvantaged students, and post-secondary readiness. However, no correlation was found between school social workers and Accountability rating.
