Abstract
Toll roads are becoming ubiquitous across the United States as funds for transportation projects have not kept up with traffic demand. In the North Texas region specifically, there are multiple toll road projects currently under construction and it is currently unclear what impact toll roads have on the surrounding demographics and development. This study analyzes the demographic changes that have occurred over time surrounding toll and non-toll corridors in the North Texas region to discover any significant differences between the two types of facilities. If I do find that there are significant differences, then it is likely that equity is a concern surrounding toll roads in the region. This study incorporates a review of existing methodologies to estimate impacts of highways, spatial analysis of demographic changes surrounding toll and non-toll corridors, and statistical analysis to determine the magnitude of any demographic differences. These methods help inform if equity issues are a warranted concern surrounding toll roads in the North Texas region. From my analysis, I can recommend policy interventions that could support more equitable development around toll roads.
