Abstract
Asthma tends to be underdiagnosed and undertreated. Several studies concluded that asthma was poorly managed among pediatric care providers. To address the patient/problem, intervention, comparison, outcome, and setting (PICOTS) question: Among the pediatric providers at a primary care clinic in an urban Texas city, what was the effect of administering asthma control tests (ACT/C-ACT) on modifying the care plan of pediatric patients diagnosed with uncontrolled asthma? The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to evaluate the association between the test scores and the provider’s decision whether to change the patient’s care plan, and ultimately to bring the clinic into compliance with Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines for asthma management. ACT/C-ACT questionnaires for pediatric patients are designed by physicians to assess physician knowledge. Statistical analysis using effect sizes (Cramér’s V) revealed that the intervention had a large effect on improving the provider’s decisions about whether to change the patient’s care plan. These decisions did not depend on the ages of the patients. Providers need to stay abreast of current improvements in asthma management, such as the administration and interpretation of the ACT and C-ACT tests, in order to improve the quality of care for pediatric asthmatic patients.
