Abstract

Background: With sexually transmitted diseases on the rise in central Texas, advance practice providers were not following evidence-based practice recommendations for sexually transmitted infection screening, treatment, and follow-up. Screening for sexually transmitted diseases occurred at a rate of less than one patient every 7.75 days.

Objective: The objective of this project was to develop and implement an advanced practice provider training tool to educate the clinic providers on sexually transmitted infections, collect pre- and post-data for the educational sexually transmitted infection bundle, and collect sexually transmitted infection screening, identification, treatment, and follow-up data generated by the clinic advanced practice providers during the term of the project.

Methods: Following an intensive literature review, the Iowa Model was chosen to guide this project. The Iowa Model provided structure, feedback loops, and the opportunity to utilize a nurse led, interdisciplinary team. Advanced practice providers took a pre-test for sexually transmitted infection knowledge and then were educated on sexually transmitted infections. Patients were screened, diagnosed, and treated for sexually transmitted infections by the clinic advanced practice provider. A post-test was administered to advanced practice providers at the end of the project to assess change in knowledge.

Results: The sexually transmitted infection screening rate more than doubled in the clinic after the intervention, increasing from one screening every 7.75 days to one screening every three days. Providers consistently tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia.

Conclusions: Advanced practice provider educational training had a positive effect on the rate of sexually transmitted infection screening. Patients received educational material and those with sexually transmitted infections were treated in a timely manner.
