Abstract

A retrospective comparative cohort study examined the demographics, academic variables, and course outcomes among Hispanic undergraduate nursing students in comparison with their non-Hispanic peers. The researchers found that Hispanic students experienced a significantly higher use of financial aid, and a significantly higher number of course failures and course withdrawals. However, there were no significant differences in the number of course drops before the course census date or the total number of courses dropped both before and after the course census date.

A second study used a retrospective associational design to describe and compare factors associated with students' decision to drop or withdraw from a course and their use and perception of financial aid use in an undergraduate nursing program among ethnic and racial groups. Hispanic students were significantly more likely to report financial status and motivation as factors contributing to their decision to drop or withdraw from a course than non-Hispanic students. Hispanic students were significantly more likely to report family responsibility and encouragement by friends as factors contributing to their decision to remain in a course than non-Hispanic students. Hispanic and non-Hispanic students did not significantly differ on seeking or requesting additional financial aid prior to dropping a course. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the associations between ethnicity, financial aid use, the perception of course drops and dropping a course. In the final model, Hispanic ethnicity was the sole remaining predictive variable for course drops.
