Abstract
The design process entails a collection of connected variables. Any program constructed to automate this process requires a carefully defined structure such that design modifications are easy to implement, and errors in the program are easy to trace. The most direct path to this involves the creation of a process flowchart that maps the intricate dependencies of design variables. A platform and data transmission method must then be selected that satisfy these capability criteria, along with any other design considerations. The platform selected was MATLAB, with data transmission occurring via data structures. The modular nature of the program design allowed versatility in the use of each module. The flexibility of design variable modification allowed trade studies to be conducted with little modification to existing code, and minimal additional code. The result is a program that can complete preliminary component sizing, as well as synthesize the vehicle design to form a final configuration.
