Abstract
Like much of society, higher education is digitizing. While this brings new opportunities for increasing access to quality learning, it also raises concerns about what a digital university will look like. In a climate of reduced state support and growing questions about the value of a formal education, higher education has an opportunity to present its own vision and respond to narratives of change that are rooted inprofit-making, rather than service to society. What role will educators play? How will we teach? What will be the role of the institution and the learner? Will educational technology take over much of the teaching function? Will edtech startups, as currently hyped, push universities to the side and take over core offerings through large scale classes and automated assessment?
