Abstract
Design work from the 1983 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Student Centre. Jay Hoffman and Darrel Fields. The challenge for the project was to site a student centre at the heart of the UTA campus without impeding upon one of its few green open spaces. This is achieved by creating a profile that folds the land into the sky to a height that responds to the adjacent buildings. Two grass-covered hills replace a flat landscape to form a groundscraper which contains the programmatic functions. Crossing paths tunnel through the higher elements and bridge over courtyards subtracted from the profile. The sloping form continues below-grade to fold the sky down into the land to provide for light and natural ventilation.
