He has led striking Rio Grande Valley farm workers in their efforts to organize a union, received a hero's welcome when about 25 workers from Rio Grande City escorted him to the microphone at the Texas American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) convention at Hotel Texas.
