The first contestant for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Minoru Nojima, 24, of Yokusuka, Japan arrived with an interpreter, Miss Juko Sato, niece of Van Cliburn jury member Motonari Iguchi. Nojima expressed pleasure at the warm weather ad delight at the "wide spaces, just as in the movies ". Fort Worth Star-Telegram Evening edition September 24, 1969.
