Abstract

This study introduces a new data set to the literature on the outsourcing of household labor. The 2005 Pew Social Trends survey on Family Bonds is analyzed with consideration for established approaches on outsourcing. Particular attention is paid to single parents within the sample. Contrary to previous research, this study finds little support for the time availability approach, however both the resources and demand approaches were supported. Additionally, the impact of household composition, familial support, and political ideology on outsourcing were evaluated. While household composition was not associated with outsourcing, a correlation was found for familial support and political ideology. This study contributed to our understanding of how families manage their household labor by utilizing market options.
