Abstract
Asthma remains a significant health concern globally, with healthcare delivery varying across different systems. This study aims to compare asthma care within three healthcare system: the Beveridge model (United Kingdom), the Bismarck model (Switzerland), and the National Health Insurance model (Canada) focusing on cost, quality, and accessibility. This study used a systemic review, gathering published evidence from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Data Explorers that explicitly met eligibility criteria for asthma treatment and outcomes. Evidence from government reports, public health databases, and peer-reviewed literature were analyzed. Kissick’s Iron Triangle framework was applied to assess the inherent trade-offs between reducing costs, enhancing quality, and ensuring access to care. The analysis reveals that while the UK models minimize direct patient expenses, it exhibits higher hospital admission and mortality rates. In contrast, Canada’s balanced approach results in moderate costs and improved patient outcomes, whereas Switzerland’s system, characterized by higher expenditures, offers intensive care management. The findings underscore the importance of integrated policy strategies that optimize resource allocation and enhance patient-centered care for asthma.

I would like to thank Dr. Erin Carlson for her support and guidance throughout this research. Her knowledge of global health interested me to learn more about how every country has different health outcomes while they are all economically- similar countries. The process of learning these three different healthcare models helped me understand the topics I might not be able to learn in class.
I would also like to thank the Honors College staff, Dr. Makenzie Whitener, who assisted and supported me throughout my undergraduate research. She is a very helpful resource for me when creating the poster and formatting the honors capstone paper.
