Knowing which authors anthology editors selected since the 19th century offers valuable historic contexts for understanding the literary "Canon Wars" of the late 20th century, as well as the culture wars that continue today. The present controversies about books taught and held in libraries and the upcoming Semiquincentennial make this knowledge especially relevant as Americans offer differing versions of what "America" represents and when "America" began.
