Finding Meaning in the Stars
For thousands of years, humans have looked to the stars and found meaning. Against the backdrop of the night sky, we see constellations - shapes that help us understand the universe we live in. Across generations and cultural boundaries, people have used constellations to share stories of their beliefs, creation narratives, and mythology. These groups of stars and their position in the sky were also critical for navigators with no other ways to determine directions and distances at night.
Sometime in the second millennium BCE, different cultures began practicing Astrology - or studying the movements and positions of certain constellations and interpreting their influence on humans and the natural world. Western astrology is believed to have started in Mesopotamia in the 19th - 17th centuries BCE. This system is based on twelve constellations due to their position along the same route that the Sun, Moon, and planets take through the sky. Many cultures believed that these movements and the relationships between celestial bodies could be interpreted as messages from the gods, indications of a person's personality, or omens and predictors of future events.
