STAGE 2 Stone Shields Protecting Cartagena

The next stage sounds fascinating! In it we will explore the defense systems throughout the different eras in Cartagena's history. Although the city offered the best port for trade between Spain and the New Kingdom of Granada, its topographical features made it vulnerable to enemy attacks and natural disasters. So the King of Spain had to build a system of fortifications to protect it. These fortifications did not remain the same throughout the centuries; due to different attacks, they were destroyed and rebuilt, and some of their names also changed.

Let's explore together! Imagine that we are adventurers in search of historical treasures. In this game, we will discover the forts, castles, batteries and walls that were built to protect Cartagena and its bay. Look at the map and locate each number to discover what the defense system was like in each era. Get ready for an exciting journey through time and history!

<font color="#181C4E">THE INVISIBLE HERO</font>

Did you know that in the city of Cartagena we have an invisible hero! Yes! It is a hero who is always there protecting us but we do not see... Do you want to know who it is? A long time ago, in the history of Cartagena, something important happened. Some ships were shipwrecked and formed a sandbank that blocked the entrance to the canal in Bocagrande, turning the island of Tierra Bomba into a peninsula. One hundred years later, when everyone was resigned to accept what happened, the canal was opening again, and this endangered the defenses of the bay. If the canal became accessible to all ships, the fortifications of Bocachica would no longer be useful to protect the city. The strategists decided to build something special to protect the city. It is a submerged wall called the "Bocagrande Breakwater". This amazing work was made to block the passage of ships through Bocagrande and is between Punta Icacos and Tierrabomba. It was built by order of the Spanish Crown in 1773, and the engineer Don Antonio Arévalo was in charge. The Bocagrande breakwater left only one path, the Bocachica, to enter the bay of Cartagena and protect the city. It was a very clever defensive strategy!

An Invisible Hero-100

<font color="181C4E">MEET ANTONIO DE AREVALO</font>

The genius behind Cartagena's incredible defenses. This engineer did amazing things:

  1. He transformed the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas into a gigantic fortress with an advanced design.
  2. He created the Fort of San Fernando de Bocachica, with its foundations under the water of the bay.
  3. He modernized the Fort of San José, adding a long battery of cannons that juts out into the sea.
  4. He built the Battery of Ángel San Rafael on top of Cerro del Horno, on Tierrabomba Island.
  5. He improved the city walls, including the famous Espigón de la Tenaza.
  6. He built the Cuartel de Las Bóvedas, now a craft market, originally used for the city's militias.
  7. He created strategic cannon batteries, such as the Carro de la Popa.
  8. He protected the city walls with an underwater defense called Escollera de la Marina.
  9. His most magnificent work was the Bocagrande Breakwater, a 1,800-meter underwater wall that still prevents the passage of large ships.
